The Kandy to Ella Train: What to Expect
By Visit Lanka Editorial · 21 August 2026
The rail journey between Kandy and Ella (or the further stretch to Badulla) passes through some of Sri Lanka's most photographed tea-country scenery, with the train hugging ridgelines and crossing the iconic Nine Arch Bridge along the way.
Reserved second and first-class seats can be booked in advance and are worth securing in high season, though travelling in unreserved third class and standing near an open door has its own appeal for shorter sections. The full journey takes around 6–7 hours, so consider whether the whole route or a shorter scenic segment suits your itinerary better.
Bring snacks, water, and a light jacket — carriages can get a cool breeze once moving, especially at higher altitudes.
