Sri Lanka Packing List: What You Actually Need
By Visit Lanka Editorial · 18 August 2026
Sri Lanka's climate ranges from tropical coastal heat to genuinely cool hill-country evenings, so layering is key. Lightweight, breathable clothing covers most of the trip, but pack at least one warm layer for Nuwara Eliya or Ella evenings.
For temple visits, shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering — sandals that slip on and off easily are worth their weight. A reusable water bottle, reef-safe sunscreen, and a lightweight rain jacket for sudden tropical showers round out the essentials.
Finally, bring a physical adapter for the mixed plug types still found across the island's hotels — type D, G and M sockets can all appear even within a single property.
