Responsible Wildlife Watching in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's wildlife tourism has grown quickly, and not every operator holds the same standards. In national parks like Yala, avoid jeeps that crowd sightings or drive off-track, and favour guides who maintain a respectful distance and prioritise the animal's behaviour over a closer photo. For whale watching from Mirissa or Trincomalee, choose smaller operators who follow responsible approach distances and turn off engines near sighted animals rather than the largest boats promising guaranteed sightings. A good rule of thumb: if an experience is being marketed as guaranteeing extremely close contact with a wild animal, it's worth asking harder questions about how that's achieved.
