Wilpattu takes its name from the willus, or natural sand-rimmed lakes, scattered through its dense forest and scrub — a distinctive landscape found nowhere else on the island. It receives a fraction of the visitors that Yala does, offering a more solitary, wilder feeling safari experience, with leopard, sloth bear and abundant birdlife around the willus at dawn.

Travel Tips

A good alternative or addition to Yala for travellers wanting a quieter safari. Access is more convenient from the north-west coast or Anuradhapura than from Colombo.
