Udawalawe National Park was created around a reservoir and offers some of the most consistent elephant viewing in Asia, with herds regularly seen grazing the open plains around the water. It's a good complement to a Yala safari — less famous for leopards, but generally quieter and highly reliable for elephants, along with water buffalo, crocodiles and a healthy population of raptors.

Travel Tips

Visit the nearby Elephant Transit Home feeding times to see rescued and rehabilitated calves. A good half-day add-on between the south coast and hill country.
