Trincomalee's vast natural harbour has drawn traders and navies for centuries, and the town retains a distinct multicultural character shaped by Tamil, Sinhalese and Muslim communities. Nearby Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches offer calm, clear water and a much quieter atmosphere than the south coast, particularly in the May–September season when the east coast enjoys its best weather while the south is wetter.
Travel Tips
The east coast season runs opposite to the south and west — plan timing accordingly if combining coasts. Pigeon Island offers excellent snorkelling a short boat ride from Nilaveli.
