Galle Fort, built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, is one of the best-preserved colonial sea forts in Asia. Inside its ramparts, narrow streets lined with converted merchant villas now house boutique hotels, independent galleries, and some of the south coast's best cafés. A walk along the sea wall at sunset, looking out over the Indian Ocean, is a quiet highlight of any south coast stay.

Travel Tips

Explore the fort on foot early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Many of the best shops and cafés are tucked down side streets, so wander off the main road.
