The Dambulla Cave Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprises five caves carved into a huge granite outcrop, each filled with statues and ceiling-to-floor murals painted and repainted over two thousand years. It's a short, manageable climb compared to Sigiriya, making it an easy complementary visit. The town itself is also a useful base for the surrounding Cultural Triangle, with a good range of accommodation.

Travel Tips

Remove shoes and cover shoulders/knees before entering the caves. Combine with Sigiriya as a single day if time is limited.
