Anuradhapura was the political and religious centre of Sri Lanka for well over a thousand years, and its scale reflects that. Enormous brick dagobas (some among the tallest ancient structures in the world), the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree in India, and ruined monastic complexes are spread across a wide, green, contemplative site best explored slowly by bicycle or tuk-tuk.

Travel Tips

The site is large and spread out — hire a bicycle or tuk-tuk rather than attempting it on foot. Dress modestly as this remains an active place of worship.
